Tour Highlights

Museum of the Walls

Part of the Aurelian Walls, constructed in the 3rd century AD to protect the city, this museum unveils the secrets of Rome’s ancient fortifications. Walk along a 350-meter stretch of the defensive patrol path, passing through centuries-old towers and battlements. The 5th-century Honorian walls still showcase their original arrow slits, arched openings, and staircases that once led to strategic control rooms. Discover modifications from the medieval era and the 19th century, including rifle loopholes used during the revolutionary battles of 1848. One of the most intriguing features is a medieval fresco of the Madonna and Child, painted by a hermit within one of the towers.

Appian Way

Renowned as the Regina Viarum or “Queen of Roads,” the Appian Way was established in 312 BC as a crucial military and trade route connecting Rome to the East. Lined with monumental tombs and ruins, its ancient basalt paving stones still bear the marks of time. Once an essential pathway for soldiers, traders, and pilgrims, it later became a hub for medieval settlements. Despite centuries of war and looting, the road preserves impressive remnants of its past, including the striking Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, a symbol of Rome’s enduring legacy.

San Sebastiano Catacombs

Nestled beneath the Appian Way, these subterranean burial grounds provide a glimpse into early Christian Rome. Carved into volcanic rock, the catacombs date back to the 2nd century AD and once served as resting places for saints and martyrs. Their walls are adorned with intricate frescoes and inscriptions, showcasing the devotion and spiritual life of the early Christian community. These underground tunnels were not only cemeteries but also sacred spaces for worship and remembrance, preserving stories of resilience and faith.
